چکیده

The evolution of the ejected liquid sheet, or lamella, created after impact of a liquid drop onto a solid surface is studied using high-speed video in order to observe the detailed time evolution of the thickness of the rim of the lamella. Since it has been suggested that splashing behavior is set at very early times after impact, we study early times up to D0 /U0, where D0 and U0 are the diameter and speed of the impacting drop, respectively, for different liquid viscosities and impact speeds below the splashing threshold. Within the regime of our experiments, our results are not consistent with the idea that the lamella rim grows similar to the boundary layer thickness. Rather, we find that the rim thickness is always much larger than the boundary layer thickness, and that the rim thickness decreases with increasing impact speed. For lower impact speeds, the increase in the rim thickness is consistent with a #t response over the limited time range available, but the dependence is not simply proportional to #!, where ! is the kinematic viscosity, and there is a strong dependence of the rim thickness on the impact speed U0. Scaling of the rim height using a balance of inertial and surface tension forces provides some collapse of the data at lower impact speeds. We also observe an unusual plateau behavior in thickness versus time at higher impact speeds as we approach the splash threshold. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. $doi:10.1063/1.3313360%

Inclined to splash: triggering and inhibiting a splash with tangential velocity

When a liquid drop impacts a smooth, solid, dry surface, the drop forms a radially spreading lamella, which can lead to a splash. Previous studies have focused almost exclusively on impacts perpendicular to a surface; yet it is common for drops to impact on angled or moving surfaces. The asymmetry of such impacts leads to an azimuthal variation of the ejected rim, and under certain conditions o...

Temporal Variation of Interrill Erosion Affected by Slope Gradient in Soils with Different Texture

The process of splash of soil particles by raindrops and their transport by splash or surface shallow flow is considered as interrill erosion, which can reduce soil fertility and cause pollution of surface water. This research was carried out to investigate the temporal variation of interrill erosion in different soils affected by surface slope. For this purpose, laboratory experiments were car...

Splash control of drop impacts with geometric targets.

Drop impacts on solid and liquid surfaces exhibit complex dynamics due to the competition of inertial, viscous, and capillary forces. After impact, a liquid lamella develops and expands radially, and under certain conditions, the outer rim breaks up into an irregular arrangement of filaments and secondary droplets. We show experimentally that the lamella expansion and subsequent breakup of the ...

Full thickness advancement flap to reconstruct large helical rim

Introduction: Auricular reconstruction of partial ear defects is usually challenging, especially in extended resections or traumas. Helical rim is the most noticeable part of ear with aesthetic significance, which demands detailed procedures. Helical rim advancement is a known procedure to reshape lacerated rim. In the original technique, a chondrocutaneous flap is raised in order to preserve t...

Dynamics of initial drop splashing on a dry smooth surface

We simulate the onset and evolution of the earliest splashing of an infinite cylindrical liquid drop on a smooth dry solid surface. A tiny splash is observed to be emitted out of the rim of the lamella in the early stage of the impact. We find that the onset time of the splash is primarily dependent on the characteristic timescale, which is defined by the impact velocity as well as the drop rad...
